35% reduction in Emergency Department readmissions a “Significant Achievement”
Lewisham Healthcare NHS Trust has improved the support for patients who are treated in the hospital’s emergency department – reducing the need for follow-up emergency care. Compared to last year, there has been a 35% reduction in the number of patients who need to re-visit the Emergency Department 30 days after receiving treatment there.

Dr Liz Aitken, Director of Acute and Elderly Medicine, said that this had been achieved by community and hospital healthcare professionals working closely together under one organisation. To read more click here

Helen Tattersfield, Chair of the Clinical Commissioning Group stated:
“This shows the benefits of having local emergency services at Lewisham. The hospital has developed links with local services and other agencies to ensure that patients get the support they need outside of hospital to stay healthy and independent. This is unlikely to be achievable if patients go to hospitals out of the borough – leading to longer hospital stays for patients, and an increase in readmission rates.

“Reducing re-admission rates is very important. However, even by achieving this, if you look at the figures for admissions and at the health needs of the local people, there is still a very strong need for emergency services in Lewisham.”
