Care data

button2WHAT IS THE CARE.DATA SCHEME AND WHY SHOULD WE OPPOSE IT?
GP practices across England have been required to supply patients’ personal and confidential medical information to the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).  A national database of this information should be used for medical research, commissioning and improving care, BUT…

The Government has delayed collecting this data because of widespread objections that:

  • HSCIC has already sold hospital data to private companies;
  • these companies are likely to focus on research and treatments for profit, not patient benefit;
  • individuals’ data is not anonymous and could be misused by health insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

Now, the Government has set up some safeguards and is trying out a scheme in a few GP practices.  It is not clear yet, whether the system could be abused by any organisation.

As a patient you have no right to know what has happened to your own data, BUT…
As a patient, you do have a right with your family, to opt-out of this system, otherwise you will be included.

surgeryOPT OUT FORM
Download the leaflet here, fill in the form overleaf, one for each member of your family.  Hand it to your surgery.
This tells your GP to pass your data on only for your personal treatment.  This form will not affect any other services you get.

Save Lewisham Hospital Campaign will publicise any changes made that will mean that your personal information is safe and secure and that a national database can then only be used for medical research and public health purposes.

You can choose then, or at any time, to ask your GP to supply your information to the database.
